The best is often saved for last - the conditions in Leucate really came into their own on the home straight and the freestylers were finally able to let off the leash.
Firstly, the ladies were allowed into the ring. We are already used to the fact that new faces are constantly entering the stage at the GWA Wingfoil World Cup, but it was not to be expected that the 15-year-old German-Spanish rider Nia Suardiaz would outdo the entire world elite. Suardiaz, who had previously only completed one event, put in an impressive performance in wind speeds of 20 to 30 knots: she completed eight out of eleven trick attempts, performed frontside 540s and other moves and managed to beat her Czech rival Paula Novotna in the final.
We will shortly be introducing you to wingfoil hotshot Nia Suardiaz in a portrait on the Homepage ahead. Here are the highlights from the women's competition:
In 2021, Balz Müller skipped a few events for personal reasons - he became a father. This season, "Radiculo" is back in the thick of the action - and how! He reeled off his programme round after round, solid as a Swiss watch: Müller ended up with monstrous frontside 720s, front and backflips and even clew-first backflips (where the wing is flown from the trailing edge) on his scoresheet.
That was so much fun! The final against Gollito was the best heat of my life.
His opponent in the final, the multiple windsurfing world champion in freestyle, Gollito Estredo, really gave his all in 30 to 40 knots, showing massive front flips and 720s - and was still powerless against the Swiss fireworks of Balz Müller. Nevertheless, second place is Estredo's best result so far at the GWA Wingfoil World Cup.
Don't miss the highlights of the final of the GWA Wingfoil World Cup Leucate.
The World Cup on Lake Silvaplana continues from 14 to 19 June. Can Balz Müller also win at his home event? Or will world champion Titouan Galea strike back? We will report for you!
