Would you like a little more? Elegant wood covers the very sporty RRD Retro Wood 14 touring board. But can the elegant look also shine in practice on the water?

With the RRD Retro Wood 14, you can probably enter the Hamburg Yacht Club with impunity. The pointed bow looks just as elegant as the underwater hull in real wood veneer. Unfortunately, this is not visible when paddling. The board runs extremely smoothly through the water, enables very fast touring speeds and is also suitable for heavier paddlers. This is because the bow and stern are clearly raised, and the board is only fully in the water at 80 kilos on deck, but only if you stand quite far forward.

This is great: On downwinders, the bow can be kept free very easily by going back slightly. With every paddle stroke, it can be propelled forwards with little effort (with a moderate touring paddle stroke, you can achieve around 7.3 km/h on an RRD), making it look like a mixture of touring board and semi-racer, it reacts somewhat more sensitively to side waves, but can also be steered very well with foot control by applying edge pressure when paddling. For experienced paddlers, the board is still sufficiently safe to turn over the sporty, narrow tail. There are inserts for two large luggage nets at the front and rear, so nothing stands in the way of a multi-day tour.

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
