Rising star of the month: Pepelow
Large standing area, sheltered location and optimum infrastructure: Pepelow on the Salzhaff leaves hardly anything to be desired and is therefore our up-and-coming spot of the month!

Between Lübeck and Rostock, the Wustrow peninsula lies protectively in front of the coast, forming the Salzhaff. Only connected to the Baltic Sea by a narrow opening, the shallow lagoon is a perfect spot for beginners, intermediates and all other shallow water lovers. The heart of the local scene beats in Pepelow on the east side. A gigantic standing area on the water ensures relaxed practice and safety, while on land no wish remains unfulfilled, even for non-surfers (yet). Surf school, hire, several campsites and holiday home areas right on the water, catering and lots of activities all around form a perfect infrastructure.

Journey

Pepelow is located halfway between Lübeck and Rostock, around one and a half hours from Hamburg and around three hours from Berlin. Take the A20 or A24/A14 motorways towards Wismar and then the B105. From Neubukow, Pepelow and the campsites are signposted. Those travelling by train must get off in Neubukow and then take the shuttle to their destination.

Wind & Weather

Like so many Baltic Sea spots, Pepelow is also dependent on the general weather conditions. Westerly winds are somewhat weakened by the Wustrow peninsula, while easterly winds are often strengthened by thermals. Because the Salzhaff has little water exchange with the Baltic Sea, it warms up noticeably faster than most other spots. In summer, a shorty will suffice, but you can never go wrong with a 4/3. In shallow water, you can quickly get back on the board, so a session would also be possible in winter - depending on your own pain threshold.

The spots in and around Pepelow

The coast in Pepelow runs from south-west to north-east, so all westerly winds are ideal. However, because there are no large buildings or trees in the way on land, wind from the east can also blow fairly freely across the fields, making Pepelow an all-round spot for all wind directions. With onshore winds, you can heat along the coast wonderfully, with sideshore conditions you can head out onto the lagoon. However, you should stay away from the Wustrow peninsula, as the area is a nature reserve and trespassing is strictly prohibited. This also applies to all sections of the shore that are not authorised for surfing. There is also a large and well-equipped surf school, " San Pepelone " can be found directly at the spot, so that you can get on the water without your own equipment in the summer months.

The lush standing area in front of Pepelow becomes wider and wider from south to north, which means that up-and-comers should orientate themselves to the right from the shore. Strong easterly winds can push the water out of the Salzhaff, making it tight under the fin in places. Speaking of fins: in the summer months, as at many Baltic Sea spots, there is a lot of seaweed, so be sure to pack a sea fin! Shoes are also advisable, as there are sometimes stones and shells lurking in the sand.

Alternative spots to Pepelow include Boiensdorf further south and Rerik in the north. If the wind is right, you can also surf there, otherwise you will have to drive. On the Baltic Sea side, Rerik also offers moderate to powerful wave conditions next to the pier, but this requires a strong wind from the north.

Pepelow at low tide

If nothing works on the water, wait ashore at " San Pepelone " a sauna and other wellness facilities for relaxation. For the more active, there is a fitness room, climbing rock and bouldering wall and various other sports facilities. Of course, there is also SUP hire so you can at least get out on the water without a sail.

In the surrounding area, a trip to Wismar is a good idea; on rainy days, the "Wonnemar" baths or the historic old town are worth a visit. Rostock, which is a little further away, is also worth a visit, where you can go shopping if you like. Here you can find " Supremesurf " is also the nearest surf shop. The picturesque village of Rerik is also located directly on the narrow transition between the mainland and the Wustrow peninsula, where there is a pier, a pretty town centre and information about the region's varied history.
