The first of four planned information events on the Baltic Sea Protection Action Plan (APOS 2030) took place yesterday in Eckernförde. Under the motto "Baltic Sea Protection Schleswig-Holstein - Inform, Exchange, Shape", the state government is inviting citizens and organisations to find out about the current status of implementation and to participate in the protection concept. The series of events will take place in the Baltic Sea districts of Schleswig-Flensburg, Rendsburg-Eckernförde, Plön and Ostholstein and is aimed equally at private individuals, associations and political and social stakeholders.
The Baltic Sea Protection Action Plan is a follow-up project to the failed Baltic Sea National Park. It comprises a bundle of 16 measures in total, which are intended to address all sources of pollution in the Baltic Sea. The focus is on the input of nutrients, overfishing and munitions waste, as well as water pollution caused by black water and antifouling from recreational boats. According to the ministry, the plan concentrates on measures that the state of Schleswig-Holstein can implement or initiate itself. A central goal is the realisation of 12.5 % of strictly protected areas in the Schleswig-Holstein Baltic Sea. The plan also addresses existing tasks of the state government, such as the salvage of old munitions.
In terms of water sports, the plan provides for fewer restrictions than initially feared. In the new nature conservation areas, watercraft and water sports equipment will only be prohibited from travelling through designated resting bird hotspots from November to March. However, according to the NDR, corridors are to be created for surfers, sailors and kiters that can also be used during these restricted periods. It is not yet known which areas these are.
Following the kick-off event in Eckernförde, three further information evenings will be held in the coming weeks. These are intended to give citizens and interested parties in the respective regions the opportunity to find out more about the Baltic Sea Action Plan and to voice their concerns.
In addition to the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Local Government and Sport, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Transport and Tourism and the Ministry of Agriculture are also involved in the events and the implementation of the action plan.
The events are divided into two parts: In the first part, representatives of the ministries involved will present the specific implementation steps of APOS 2030. Participants will gain detailed insights into the planned measures and their significance for the protection of the Baltic Sea. The second part offers local and regional initiatives and associations the opportunity to present options for voluntary involvement in the protection of Schleswig-Holstein's Baltic Sea (contact: ostseeschutz@e-c-crew.de)
