Rügen, an island in the Baltic Sea like any other? Not at all! With its many bays, inlets, peninsulas and headlands, this is one of Germany's windsurfing paradises on the Pomeranian coast. The title of Germany's largest island is on top of that.
The best time to travel is, like everywhere along the German coast, from April to October. This is when you will find the best combination of high wind chances and pleasant temperatures. There is often even better wind in winter, but then only extremists meet on the water. But Rügen also gets a good portion of wind in summer, with summer temperatures of up to 35 degrees! The only drawback: the seaweed also blooms in summer, so a seaweed fin is a must between July and October!
Wind:Depending on the position of the high and low pressure areas, everything is possible from calm to light winds, strong winds and storms. The nearby Cape Arkona with its famous chalk cliffs is, statistically speaking, the windiest place in Germany - on over 60 per cent of days in August, the wind blows here with more than four forces. Thanks to the Bodden and Wieke (bays and lagoons separated from the sea by peninsulas and headlands), you can find the right spot for every wind direction on Rügen. If the wind is too strong, you can usually simply switch to another, more sheltered spot.
The spots: Wiek is one of the many spots on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen. The town, located directly on the Wieker Bodden, offers a good infrastructure with Surf and kite school car park (for a fee) and a beautiful Aufrigg meadow, located directly next to a campsite. The Wieker Bodden is a huge lagoon separated from the open Baltic Sea by peninsulas. This creates the best conditions for all beginners and intermediates: the standing area is guaranteed to offer enough space for everyone - even if it can get very crowded at the height of summer and there are lots of kite beginners in the water. However, freeriders with long fins have to carry or at least pull their equipment about 300 metres to the fairway, depending on the water level. In westerly winds, the spot in question is Wiek top, east wind blows offshore here. Then it's also worth travelling to the other side of the Bodden, to Dranske, where you'll find comparable conditions.
Surf centre, surf shop and accommodation:In Dranske the VDWS school offers Rügen Pirates the surfing centre in Wiek Surf & Kite Camp courses for beginners and intermediates, and of course you can also hire equipment. Surf shops are also located here, and even camping pitches and flats are available - so you'll want for nothing here!
Journey: A bridge leads from Stralsund to Altefähr on the island. Take the E251 past Bergen auf Rügen to Lietzow. From there, continue on the 96 and turn left at Sagard onto the L30, which will take you to Wiek.
HERE there's a big guide of the spots around Rostock.
