Uggerby is located east of Hirtshals
With a strong westerly wind, Hanstholm is clearly the top spot in Denmark. But what if the wind drops? Then it's worth making a detour to Uggerby. We introduce you to the alternative spot.

Westerly winds of almost 30 knots, plus sunshine - Hanstholm is a bank if you're looking for waves in Denmark with a forecast like this. But sometimes the low-pressure systems move further north and Cold Hawaii only gets a light wind. Then it can be worth looking further north, as the area around Hirtshals offers decent alternative spots - like this weekend at the beginning of May.

Beautiful jumping spot in a charming landscape

The trip to Hirtshals may seem endless when you look at the map. The route is actually around 50 kilometres longer, but strictly speaking the journey time is only slightly different from that to Hanstholm, as you don't have to drive along country roads, but instead use the motorway all the way to Hirtshals. The journey from Kiel takes around 4.5 hours and the long journey was quickly forgotten at first sight of the spot. Similar to Romo, you can park directly on the beach, with the difference that the beach in Uggerby is only around 20 metres wide. Alternatively, there is a Uggerby BadhusThere is a car park about 100 metres behind the dunes, where you are much more sheltered from the wind.

The sandy entry into the water is easy, but the current is immediately noticeable and can be quite strong. A westerly wind is ideal here, coming sideshore from the left. As soon as you have passed the shore area with the strongest current, you can step on the gas and aim for one of the ramps that are in your way. Even far out you can still get steep jumps, in this respect Uggerby is reminiscent of the popular Romo spot in the south of the country. To ride the waves, you have to look around a bit, as the wave is not defined at one point. Once you've got into the groove, however, you can always catch waves that allow you to make a few turns downwind. The breakers usually remain moderate, so that even less experienced surfers can have fun here without having to worry about breaking their equipment.

Alternative spot Uggerby - the conclusion:

When Hanstholm is on fire, go to Hanstholm! But if the wind weakens there, the trip to the area around Hirtshals is absolutely worthwhile. If it's really blowing up here from west to west-north-west, you should first check Kjul Strand, where a mole upwind reduces the current. If the wave in Kjuk is still (too) small, head to Uggerby! As soon as the wind turns southerly, Tversted or Skiveren are the better choice. A complete guide with more spots between Lokken and Skagen can be found HERE.
