Greece: Spot Guide Euboea
There is plenty of wind in the Greek Aegean. The Meltemi also ventilates Euboea, Greece's second largest island. But hardly any windsurfers know it.

Why shouldn't the Greek wind god Aiolos put his powers at the disposal of windsurfers on Evia - Euboea in German - the second largest island in Greece? I visited the island thirty years ago and wanted to find out what had become of it, so I visited this relatively unknown island in the summer of 2018 and 2019.

If you want to combine windsurfing with hiking, cycling and original Greek culture, you'll have a great time on Evia. Euboea, with an area of 3660 square kilometres and around 220,000 inhabitants, is located in the western Aegean Sea (east of Athens) and is connected to the mainland via a bridge on the narrowest strait in the world (40 metres) near Chalkida, the main town. A natural spectacle of the tides can be observed there every six hours. A mountain range runs through the entire island, the highest mountain of which is Dirphys at 1745 metres. Steep coastlines, mountains, hilly landscapes and secluded bays alternate. There are no large hotel complexes or mass tourism on the entire island, but there is plenty to do and discover. For us windsurfers, the southern part of the island with the towns of Marmari and Karystos is a good choice.

You can find the entire Euboea spot guide with these spot descriptions and wind information as a PDF in the download area below

  • Marmari / Golden Beach
  • Marmari / Football pitch
  • Marmari / Harbour
  • Karystos
  • Galida Beach
  • Livadaki Beach
  • Katsouli Beach
  • Little Pozo
The only windsurfing (and especially kitesurfing) centre is located on Golden Beach in Marmari. There is plenty of wind, especially in high summer.
