Italy and Croatia - Adriatic Sea: from Istria to the Po
In winter, it's not the tourist mob that rages on the Italian Adriatic coast, but the bora, which attracts a very special group of tourists. It's the high season for surfers. surf author Chris Pressler and photographer Kerstin Reiger mingled with the winter holidaymakers and discovered amazing sights with their tour guide.

"A sea without cliffs," friends of mine say, "is boring." That may be true. But a sea without a beach is somehow not the real thing for surfers either. How about a mixture of the two? On the bays of Italy's northern Adriatic coast, you will find wide sandy beaches and rugged cliffs. Where the natural cliff is missing, it has been artificially created, and where it juts out too steeply into the sea, a castle has been built on top. Where you might not expect access, you discover it. A small loophole to the tingling water, which is stirred up by the strong north-easterly wind. Our journey of discovery to the northern coastal sections of the Adriatic takes us through flat stretches of land crossed by numerous rivers and, in contrast, through karstified hills covered in fertile, red earth.

You can find these spots in the area guide:

Savudrija (Salvore in Italian), Punta/Umag, Barcola/Trieste, Lignano, Cáorle, Cortellazzo, Sottomarina
