Italy: Gargano
Maestrale, Tramontana and Scirocco give Italy's boot spur its special surfer charm. The abundance of culinary specialities is a delight in spring and autumn, while the abundance of parasols and sunbeds is a source of frustration in the summer high season.

Gargano - with a hard "g" and emphasis on the first "a", the melodious name rolls off the tongue. There is something promising about the spot, rumours of eternal winds on the otherwise desolate Adriatic have not failed to have an effect among surfers. The Gargano has long since ceased to be a secret spot and has become the perfect family spot for many. With long, gently sloping beaches, bathing temperatures as early as spring, moderate gliding winds in summer for big and small surfers - and as the closest guaranteed frost-free car destination at Easter. But top surfers such as Hifly shaper Klaus Jocham have also been coming back for decades. Hoping for the good days in the low season - when Scirocco and Tramontana roar around the green, wooded, mountainous peninsula and sometimes push waves one to two metres high into the bays.

You can find these spots in the area guide:

Santa Maria di Merino, Bay of Molinella, Punta Lunga, Vieste, Spiaggia di San Lorenzo, Bay of Bezele, Bay of Sfinale, Torre Mileto, Spiaggia Pizzomunno
