Is there supposed to be wind here today?" I ask myself in amazement as I arrive at the surf spot in St. Gilgen. The picture that presents itself to me does not suggest that I am at the best surfing spot in the Salzkammergut. The place is packed with sun-hungry bathers. Some are playing cards, others are barbecuing, and the rest of the pack are frying in the midday sun. It's around 35 degrees and the wind is blowing a whopping two Beaufort. "It's two hours away. The front is approaching," explains Horst Spreitzer with shining eyes. Horst Spreitzer is one of the locals at Lake Wolfgang. He caught the surfing bug years ago, but it was only with the advent of freestyle windsurfing that he realised that you can also have fun on the local lakes with the new equipment.
