Czech Republic: Vltava reservoir
Czech Republic: Vltava reservoir
Traffic jams heading north, traffic jams heading south. A windsurfing trip at the weekend can turn into an odyssey on the motorway. A good alternative is the Vltava reservoir in the Czech Republic. With strong winds from the west, windsurfers there reach higher speeds than their colleagues in the traffic jam on the Brenner motorway.

The Vltava reservoir, or Lipno reservoir as it is known in the Czech Republic, is not a natural body of water. Before the lake was created, the villages and fields around the Vltava River were frequently hit by floods. The reservoir and dam were created and built between 1952 and 1959 in order to take away the river's power and generate energy. After the dam was built, the water soon flooded large parts of the Vlatava valley basin. New banks were created and shortly afterwards the first guests arrived in summer to explore the new recreational area. The area is one of the largest holiday regions in the Czech Republic and attracts thousands of bathers every year - and of course water sports enthusiasts. The windsurfing spots are all located on the north-west shore of the lake around the village of Cerna v Posumavi.

You can find these spots in the PDF download: Cerna v Posumavi, Jestrabi, Radslav, Dolni Vltavice, Kovarov, Hrustice
