The umbrellas are densely packed near the shore and hundreds of bathing towels transform the green lawns into a colourful patchwork quilt. Tourists line up for their daily water aerobics, wallow in the ankle- to knee-deep water or float in plastic inflatable boats or air-filled crocodiles on the mirror-smooth, 26-degree lake. Welcome to Lake Balaton!
Bad political news about the political shift to the right or the planned nuclear power plant projects have recently cast Hungary in a rather dubious light in the perception of many foreign tourists and also inhibited our own desire to travel for a long time. But we also received lots of positive news from the "Riviera of Hungary" - of windy days, jumps over steep muddy water ramps against a Jurassic Park backdrop and volcanic mountains. In brief: Lake Balaton has a total length of 77 kilometres, a width of between 14 km and 1.5 km and a shoreline length of over 200 kilometres. Especially along the southern shore, roads lead everywhere to the shore of the lake. In comparison, the northern shore, located in a national park zone, is even wilder, less populated or built-up and reed belts form natural barriers between land and lake.
