Spain: Formentera
Spain: Formentera
Apart from two delicate plateaus, Ibiza's little sister is as flat as a board and, at just 82 square metres, is clearly inferior to the other Balearic Islands in terms of surface area. It doesn't have much else going for it either - no world-famous disco temples or five-star luxury hotels. Nevertheless, Formentera has no reason to hide. Fine, long sandy beaches, breathtaking water colours and original bars make the island unique for many holidaymakers. SURF has been impressed by the natural beauty and tested the windsurfing suitability of this bathing paradise.

We are standing in front of Formentera's cult pub, the Fonda Pepe in Sant Ferran. Ever since the first hippies stranded on Ibiza's little sister island in the 1960s, the Fonda has been an insider's favourite and is now a real institution. The style of most of the travellers has remained as individual and original as the place itself. Andrea Rosati drinks and laughs among them. Andrea, who is one of the best freestylers in Italy, is one of the few permanent visitors to the island who is lured back to Formentera every year by windsurfing. "Many people don't even realise that you can surf on Formentera, but the conditions here are really great," says the broad-shouldered man, and once again a broad grin spreads across his sun-tanned cheeks.
