North Sea coast
In the Wadden Sea you will find great spots with shallow, safe areas and well-equipped surf centres. We recommend Amrum, Borkum, Wangerooge, Sylt, Norderney and especially Föhr. But you will also find the ideal combination of shallow spots and perfect windsurfing infrastructure on the mainland in Büsum, the Great Sea, Neuharlingersiel near Wilhemshaven, Meldorf or Norddeich.
Lake Dümmer
Lake Dümmer near Diepholz in Lower Saxony is a little less popular but just as good as Lake Steinhude. Despite its lush dimensions, it is only 1.5 metres deep on average, making it one huge standing area. The heart of the scene beats on the eastern shore in Hüde and Lembruch, where there are clubs and well-equipped surf schools for courses and hire.
Lake Constance
The lake on the border between Germany, Austria and Switzerland attracts visitors with moderate winds. Many surf schools and surf clubs have set up here, so you can get out on the water without your own equipment. The top spots: Radolfzell, Constance, Wasserburg, Immenstaad and Lindau.
Franconian Lake District
Although the coast is as far away as possible, there is a lively surfing scene here too. The Kleine and Große Brombachsee (Langlau, Absberg) are particularly popular, where you can hire the latest equipment and book courses. But even in Schlungenhof on the Altmühlsee and the Rothsee, you are never alone on the water on windy days.
Southern Bavaria
The Alpine region scores with good wind and, above all, impressive scenery. If you have your own equipment, you can have fun on Ammersee (Stegen, Herrsching), Waginger See (at the surf school in Gut Horn), Starnberger See (standing area & surf school in St. Heinrich), Chiemsee (surf club in Prien-Harras and centre in Bernau-Felden) and Walchensee - where there is also a surf school and other infrastructure. Around 100 kilometres further west, Lake Mandicho (Lechstaustufe 23) is popular with surfers from Augsburg, where a suitable infrastructure with a shop, school and active surf club also awaits every new windsurfer.
Ostholstein & Fehmarn
Dream spots line the Baltic Sea like a string of pearls. The heart of the region beats on Fehmarn: Germany's sunny island is not only one of the windiest corners of the republic, it also has many sheltered standing areas for every wind direction. Further plus points: The region is peppered with schools, shops and campsites. The top spots with shallow waters and standing areas: Burger Binnensee/Wulfener Hals, Lemkenhafen and of course Gold. On the mainland, Laboe, the combination spot Heiligenhafen, Pelzerhaken and the Salzhaff on the eastern side of the Bay of Lübeck are well worth a visit.
Germany Centre
Geographically speaking, this is not the region of your dreams if you are looking for the sea and the beach - but even here, far away from the coast, many people have dedicated themselves to windsurfing. The Edersee to the west of Kassel is just as much a tip as the home spot of the Sauerland surfers - the Sorpesee. The West German scene meets at the water sports lake in Zülpich or in Xanten at the Südsee.
Bodden
In the catchment area of Rostock, Berlin and Stralsund, the beautiful Müritz and the shallow Bodden waters are the perfect spots for you. The region around Rügen is also one of the windiest in the country. The shallow spot of Suhrendorf on the Schaproder Bodden on Rügen is ideal for intermediates and experts. But the Jasmund and Wieker Bodden, the Greifswald Bodden and the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula with the Saaler Bodden are also absolutely top.
Steinhuder Sea
The Steinhuder "Meer" is actually north-west Germany's largest lake and home to all surfers from Hanover, Minden and Braunschweig. During the summer months, the mostly shallow waters are significantly warmer than the North Sea and Baltic Sea, and there are also excellent surf centres and clubs here. The best places to start are the "Weiße Düne" in Mardorf and Steinhude.
Leipzig New Lake District
The flooding of the former brown coal mines has created many new windsurfing spots around Leipzig: Lake Cospuden, Lake Schladitz and Lake Markkleeberg are good tips thanks to well-equipped surf centres and a lively scene.
