Spots: Surfers on Lake Selent face restrictionsPhoto: Oliver Maier
Over the last few years, Lake Selent has become increasingly popular with surfers. Now access to the spot is being restricted - by height restriction.

Many surfers in the north use Lake Selent as a spot. Especially since foil surfing and wingsurfing have become all the rage, more and more water sports enthusiasts are coming to the inland waters. Some riders from the regatta scene also use Lake Selent as a training ground.

However, our magazine has been informed that there are plans to restrict access to the spot. The background to this is that the parking situation on site is sometimes getting out of hand. When eight-metre campers park across three parking spaces, people spend the night at the spot or regatta surfers and their trailers park at the front and make parking difficult for all other vehicles, it doesn't go down well.

For this reason, the establishment of a height restriction by the municipality of Selent was apparently already a done deal. However, as some local water sports enthusiasts in Selent have campaigned for the interests of surfers, the restriction could at least be delayed - whether and when it comes also depends on the behaviour of local visitors.

Another problem is that some water sports enthusiasts disregard the designated surfing zones. Background: Lake Selent is divided into zones and only the water area in front of and to the left of the entry point is open to surfers. Surfing is prohibited further to the right (east) of the entry point at the bathhouse. The zones are clearly communicated via a large sign at the entry point. Unfortunately, regatta and hobby surfers still surf in the zone to the east of the entry point and in front of the nature reserve on the other side of the lake.

Therefore, an urgent request to all surfers who use Lake Selent for surfing:

How do you like this article?
  • Park large vehicles in such a way that the passageway remains clear for others
  • Do not cross park, even if the car park is still empty
  • Do not stay overnight at the spot
  • Surfing only in front of the entry area and to the west (left) of it, here you have endless space
  • Do not use the small sandy beach for access, even if there are few bathers on site
  • Do not drive at full speed to the shore and watch out for bathers

As magazine representatives, we are also in contact with the municipality of Selent and want to help find constructive solutions and keep the spot open for everyone. This can only succeed if everyone is aware of the problems.

Please point this out to other water sports enthusiasts so that the misbehaviour of a few does not lead to the loss of another spot!
