Rescue for the zips of board bags, neoprene and the like: We tried out Zipper Cleaner and Lubricant, a product that is supposed to remove sand and salt.

The sudden death of zips often ends the life of board and sailbags, but also rucksacks or bags, earlier than necessary. Gearaid offers the Zipper Cleaner and Lubricant a cleaning agent that is also supposed to leave a corrosion-inhibiting, grease-free silicone film on the zip fastener. Of course, this only works as a preventative measure on zips that are not already clinically dead due to corrosion.

The product was easy to apply and was noticeably lubricating. A brush is attached to the top of the bottle with which the cleaning agent is applied and which can also remove dirt from the zip fastener. However, the long-term effects can naturally only be assessed after a few years. The combination product costs from around nine euros for a 60 ml bottle in the shop or by mail order. It is said to be suitable for both plastic and metal zip fasteners. On gearaid.eu you can find numerous other products for the care and repair of wetsuits, for example, but also for tents and bags.

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
