With the conversion of a 9'0'' wave SUP, Rachman Djajakusuma has now not only created a good beginner and cruising board for foiling, but has also demonstrated exemplary "upcycling".

A SUP with foil option is like an amphibious vehicle, like a seaplane - you get double the benefits with one board.
SUP pioneer Rachman Djajakusuma quickly realised that his long-serving wave SUP deserved a second life. The idea of upgrading the board for foiling - whether in the waves or with a wing - was quickly born. The actual conversion was then carried out in practice by his trusted shaper. You can find the entire conversion in detail below.

The "ingredients"are not rocket science: you need two solid fin boxes, fibreglass, resin and hardener, sandpaper and varnish - and of course a suitable room, protective equipment and tools.

The finished board even impressed wing expert Michi Ferchert. Good-natured and easy to "fly", the board proved that even unusual concepts can work. The board with the strongly curved nose hardly brakes after short touchdowns and immediately resumes flight. The long length makes it easier to launch and - without a wing - to paddle. The board cruises easily and elegantly, naturally not as manoeuvrable and radical as the short foil specialists. As a classic longboard with three fins, it will continue to serve its purpose in the waves without any restrictions.

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
