From 3 to 4 May, the organisers are expecting paddlers of all abilities to take part in spectacular races in the picturesque setting of Crete. With 18,000 euros in prize money and important ranking points, the event promises to be a highlight of the season.

The Agios Nikolaos on SUP event is celebrating a special anniversary in 2025: for the tenth time in a row, the event is attracting the international SUP elite to Crete. As an official ICF World Ranking Event from 3 to 4 May 2025, the race not only offers breathtaking scenery, but also the chance to score important world ranking points. The organisers are expecting paddlers of all abilities to compete in the long distance and technical disciplines. With prize money totalling 18,000 euros to be shared by the top athletes in the men's and women's competitions, the event is one of the most lucrative stops on the SUP racing calendar.

Significance for the world rankings

The points earned in Agios Nikolaos have 2025 special relevance. For the first time, an additional podium for the overall winner of the ICF World Ranking Series will be introduced at the ICF SUP World Championships in Abu Dhabi (29 October - 2 November), the organisers announced. Strong performances in Crete could also influence the seeding list for the first heats of the World Championship. This makes the Greek event even more important for ambitious athletes.

Diverse programme for all performance classes

The Agios Nikolaos on SUP 2025 is aimed at paddlers of all levels, the organisers emphasise. From juniors and amateurs to elite athletes, the races are open to everyone. It is not necessary to belong to an association. The technical races will take place in Kaló Chorió, where waves can even be expected depending on the conditions. The long-distance course takes participants along the picturesque coastline with views of the historic island of Spinalonga.

Ideal conditions in May

The organisers emphasise the perfect racing conditions in May. With average temperatures between 20 and 25°C, clear and calm water and a professional race organisation, Agios Nikolaos offers optimal conditions for exciting competitions. The combination of sporting challenge and holiday atmosphere makes the event a highlight in the SUP calendar.

Anniversary celebration and review

Since its premiere in 2015, Agios Nikolaos on SUP has developed from a local competition to an internationally recognised event in the ICF world rankings calendar, say the organisers. Over the past ten years, thousands of athletes from all over the world have taken part and numerous champions have been crowned. The anniversary edition in 2025 promises to be the most spectacular yet.

Successful previous year's event

The organisers point to the success of the 2024 edition: 230 participants from 15 countries, an excellent athlete satisfaction rating of 4.5 out of 5, professional organisation and international media coverage underlined the importance of the event. The strong support of the local community also contributed to the success.

Double race weekend on Crete

As a special bonus, athletes will have the opportunity to combine their trip to Crete with participation in the Sitia World Cup (1 - 2 May) and the Agios Nikolaos World Ranking Event (3 - 4 May). This unique back-to-back race format offers four days of top-class competition, various race formats and the chance to win a share of the combined prize money of 18,000 euros. Athletes can also collect maximum ranking points in a short space of time.

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
