This summer in Hamburg, sunshine galore is already a reason to be in a good mood. There were also top water sports performances at the Alstervergnügen in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators.

The third open Hamburg Stand Up Paddling Championship was a complete success. The 3rd open Hamburg championship was opened by the stand up paddling athletes on Friday afternoon with the sprint discipline on a 500 metre course. Against a fantastic backdrop, last year's women's winner Paulina Herpel once again impressed with the fastest time. A perfect dress rehearsal for the World Championships in Denmark, which will take place afterwards. Victory in the men's event also went to a young talent: 17-year-old Kimo Kersting was the fastest on the course. The best Hamburg athlete in the sprint and thus the new Hamburg champion was Robert Glöckner.

After a short breather, the long distance race continued. The almost 40 starters had to complete 12 laps of the Binnenalster. Unchallenged, with a time of just under 50 minutes, Berlin's Martin Teichmann took victory on the almost 8 km long course. Dirk Herpel, who finished in fifth place, was the best runner from Hamburg and thus the new long distance champion. Just behind him was his daughter Paulina Herpel in sixth place, who won both the Hamburg championship and the open women's competition. Paulina: "I really wanted to beat my father, but that will come next year!" There is a good chance of a rematch. The very positive response from athletes, spectators and the organisers of the Alster Pleasure means that AHOI SUP HAMBURG: the Hamburg SUP Championship is entering its fourth round. The largest public festival on the Alster will therefore also be a highlight in the water sports programme in 2018.

Anyone who wants to can actively participate. There are plenty of training opportunities in Hamburg. With numerous SUP hire centres and schools, the Hanseatic city is one of the strongholds of this young sport in Germany. Ahoy SUP Hamburg, congratulations to the new Hamburg champions and everyone who took part. Here's to 2018! The Hamburg championship online: www.supcuphamburg.de
