The Plötzensee lidois a very special place in the centre of the metropolis of Berlin. In addition to swimming fun on a wonderful beach, culture is also cultivated and promoted here, there is a mobile home pitch and great culinary offers. Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 have been using this special flair in Berlin Wedding for their SUP base since spring 2020. There was no reason not to organise and hold a SUP event at this location with its special ambience and flair. The Berlin SUP Cup is this race.
43 participants accepted the invitationand the invitation from Wasserfreunde to take part in a 200m sprint, a technical beach race and a long-distance race on the Plötzensee. In glorious late summer weather, SUPers from Brandenburg, Bavaria, Hamburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and of course Berlin took to the start line. Riders from Poland, Cuba, Syria and Sri Lanka brought international flair to the event. Events in Berlin are multicultural, and the Plötzensee lido is no exception.
The top SUPers in Berlin took the opportunity for a dress rehearsal for the SUP DM Flatwater, with Jonas Pauldrach, Geidy Kemnitz, Lasse-Niklas Sauerteig, Ben Tusche and Tinca Tusche the regional top athletes were at the start, with the talented group from Ingoldstadt around Tristan de Klerk a national top field was at the start line, at least in the kids and youth area, Thomas Straubel brought real class to the men's event. In sporting terms, the Berlin SUP Cup was one of the best in the region in 2020, as were the 9 newcomer kids and the fun and amateur racers. Two great days on the beach at Plötzensee for the SUP sport.
Technical Beach Racewith a beach start on a 600m lap, two beach turns to be completed with a board, a straight sprint over 200m and a 12km or 5km LD with a beach turn offered a real sporting challenge, so that up to 500 spectators on the beach were presented with stand-up paddling in its finest form. They also took advantage of the numerous opportunities to join in on the boards from partners Starboard, Indiana, GTS and Penguin.
