Perhaps one of the best ways to discover the world is from a water perspective. Stand up paddling makes it possible! Let yourself drift, enjoy the feeling of freedom, consciously perceive and observe yourself and the nature around you as you glide upright over the water. Timm Kruse's practical handbook is just the thing for anyone who would like to venture onto the board or expand their experience and expertise in SUP.
If anyone knows his way around a SUP, it's Timm Kruse. The author and globetrotter has already travelled more than 100,000 kilometres on the board, covered the most adventurous routes and paddled across several national borders. With his book, he wants to share his passion for SUP with others and motivate them to try it out for themselves, because with a little practice, anyone can do this sport. Peter Rochel from the SUP Online Academy supported Timm Kruse with his great expertise during the research and creation of the book.
When we look out over larger bodies of water on summer weekends, it almost looks like the world has been waiting for this sport."
Let's start with a brief introduction to the history of SUP. For thousands of years, people have been moving across the water in a standing position and the culture of stand-up paddling can be found all over the world. Over time, it has developed into a recognised trend sport and, in recent years, a popular leisure activity and a real boom.
One of the most important prerequisites for a successful SUP introduction is the right basic equipment. That's why the corresponding chapters on material science, clothing and equipment are a must. They answer key questions such as: Which board and which paddle are best suited to me? General information about board types, paddles, leashes and fins is also provided.
The preparatory part of the book is supplemented by sections on safety on the water (what dangers are there and what do you need to be aware of?) and information on weather and water conditions.
Then it's off into the water with a detailed chapter on technique for beginners. Many illustrated step-by-step instructions slowly guide you through your first attempts at paddling on your knees, give tips on standing up, finding your balance and show you the correct paddling position, movement and technique. Once you've got started, you can build on the skills you've learnt with different paddle strokes to stop, turn or dock with the board.
But advanced SUPers will also get their money's worth with this book: the next chapter is dedicated to the technique and starts for professionals. With the appropriate practice, a wide variety of manoeuvres can be performed and higher speeds built up.

There are natural wonders, magnificent landscapes and incredibly majestic animals to admire from the board all over the planet".
Not every body of water is the same. The different types of waters and their special features are also presented in this detailed standard work and their dangers explored. SUPing with wind and waves is particularly exciting and an additional challenge. Not only is it a lot of fun - SUP surfing can even put you ahead of the surfers.
Finally, everything revolves around tours and equipment. Timm Kruse presents the best spots in and around Germany - whether lakes, rivers or sea regions - and gives tips for the best SUP spots worldwide, where you can paddle along magnificent coasts and paradisiacal beaches or with humpback whales or dolphins.
