There were 75 stand-up paddlers at the start of the qualifiers on Saturday, with four men and four women qualifying for the quarter-finals on Sunday, as well as ten juniors. In a fast-paced race, Alba Frey was able to leave her rival Mariecarmen Rivera behind in the final, who crashed in the last race. Frey only needed around 33 seconds to cross the XXL pool at the fair twice and master the difficult conditions on the short and narrow course. "It was exciting to compete on the pool in these conditions. It's actually more difficult than in open water and then the best women in the world were here too. It was a lot of fun." Third and fourth place went to Katniss Paris and Susak Molinero.
In the men's race, birthday boy Manuel Hoyuela won the Spanish final against his compatriot Ivan de Frutos Ruiz. Brazilian champion Eri Tenorio followed in third place ahead of Unax Etxeberria. "For me, this is the best present in the world today! When I found out about this event, I really wanted to be part of it. It was an incredible experience here in Düsseldorf," said the happy winner immediately after the final.
Belar Diaz, founder of the Eurotour said: "We are very happy with this race. This was our first sprint event in our eleven-year history. The cheering spectators made it very special. The tension was very high in every race until the end."
Petros Michelidakis, Director of boot Düsseldorf, presented the winners with their prizes and said: "I am very pleased that we were able to show how varied surfing is on the pool and that we were able to give the visitors pure emotions. That brought the magic into the hall."
