How is SUP organised in Germany?
On the website sup-germany.com all information and dates will now be collected in the merger of the three associations (DKV, DWV and GSUPA), explains DKV department head Steven Bredow. The most important dates: "The German Flatwater Championships in Radolfzell, the Open Ocean Championship on Fehmarn and the finals in Berlin." There is no annual German ranking list and, apart from the finals, participation is open to everyone. The SUP Alps Trophy has its own ranking list with six races on marvellous lakes, which has united several SUP nations for years.
What SUP events are there in Austria?
For the Austrian racing scene, the ASF as an association, as sports director Rudy van Haven explains, adding: "We work closely with the Austrian Surfing Association and the Canoeing Association." Much like in Germany. As a starting licence for official races, you purchase a start number and are then listed in the annual rankings in the sprint, tech race and long-distance disciplines. This is open to everyone, but you must have an Austrian passport to take part in the ÖM. With one exception: on the ultra-long distance, two participants share a board one after the other in the he-she mixed competition. For soul paddlers, Rudy recommends "his" event, the "Raven" on 28 May in Vienna. "But the Alps Trophy is now also designed in such a way that nobody is left out," adds Rudy, "from family races and amateur races to test and party options, everything is included." That sounds like a good way to get started with SUP events and get a taste of racing in a relaxed atmosphere.
