In 2019, the main marathon is from 25 - 28 April. However, SUP or paddling as part of the marathon is also possible from 1 - 30 April. This additional option was created so that not everyone is out and about on the same day, thus protecting nature. Another advantage is that you can choose a day with perfect weather. The aim of this marathon is not to cover the distance you have set yourself (5, 10, 21 or 42 kilometres) as quickly as possible, but to cover as much distance as possible. Some professional SUPers confirmed that it can be a real challenge to cover these distances on the very narrow rivers with several locks and the tame current. The special thing about the Spreewald Marathon is that it runs completely through the biosphere reserve with its unspoilt nature and can make the tour an experience for the whole family. The conditions for SUPers are the same as for paddleboarders. In the future, the organisers are perhaps even planning to create a sprint course as a further sporting challenge with timekeeping. As a reward, each participant receives a certificate and a medal in the form of a typical Spreewald cucumber. All other important information can be found at www.spreewaldmarathon.de under the heading Paddling. The perfect way to get a taste of Spreewald paddling is to visit Martin Fix ( www.sup-spree.de ), because no one knows his way around the extensive canals as well as he does. To make sure nobody gets lost, Martin always has a waterproof map to hand. Without it, it's difficult to find the way back from the canal jungle to the starting point.
