Where can you still find surf shops and what's on offer locally? surf is now introducing you to Germany's surf shops in a loose series! We'll start in the far north with Surfpirates in Flensburg!

Would you like to present your shop here too? Please write an e-mail to redaktion@surf-magazin.de!

Who are you and where can you be found?

We are Surfpirates and in addition to our online shop, which is used by our customers worldwide, we have our 1000 square metre headquarters in Flensburg with our large shop, warehouse and offices.

When was your shop founded, what have been important milestones since then?

Surfpirates has been around since 1992 - and a lot has happened to us since then. Our online shop was launched in 2004, which was still pretty pioneering work in the scene at the time. In 2019, founder Marc Breitfelder handed over the reins to Julian Schön and Bernd Jencio, who had both been part of the team for over ten years. And in 2023, we finally moved into our new, large headquarters in Flensburg - with more space for the warehouse, shop and ideas.

What sports do you have in your programme?

We are one of the last shops that really cover the broad spectrum of the industry. We have everything you need for windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling, SUP and surfing! We also offer a huge selection of accessories from Neos to GoPro!

Approximately how many boards, sails and wings does Surfpirates have in stock?

Quite a lot! We have several hundred boards, kites, wings, foils and sails in stock.

The online shop is our daily bread."

Can I also order online from you?

In any case! This is our daily bread and butter and the online shop also enables us to offer this large selection to local customers!

Do you have special events like camps, flea markets, parties or something like that?

Yes, definitely! Once a year, we organise our big test festival on the Danish island of Römö - where you can try out equipment from around 20 windsurf, kite and foil brands free of charge. We also organise one or two movie nights a year in our shop with the latest videos from the scene. A summer festival with a flea market is also being planned. Information on this will be provided regularly via our social media channels and the newsletter.

What makes Surfpirates special?

In addition to our expertise, which we have gained through many days on the water, we score points with a really large selection - from the latest A-brands to heavily discounted models from the previous year. This means that everyone can find the right setup - whether beginner or professional. We also attach great importance to honest advice and direct customer contact: We're not just online, we're also there every day in our shop in Flensburg. There we are in personal dialogue, provide individual advice, talk shop and discuss the latest developments!

Can you remember any bizarre or unusual experiences in the shop?

Phew, there are quite a few... For example, customers have often asked how much the rucksack would cost. But it was a kite bag, which of course contained a kite.
When the answer was several hundred euros, everything fell out of the customer's face.

The enthusiasm is there! People are keen - it's just that the limits of what is feasible are becoming increasingly narrow for many."

What is your impression of the market and the attitude of customers?

The market is anything but easy at the moment - especially in windsurfing, we are clearly noticing a lack of young talent. At the same time, prices are continuing to rise, which puts many people off. A windsurfing board for over 3,000 euros is often met with incomprehension by customers - and by us too. Unfortunately, this doesn't make the sport any more attractive. Manufacturers are currently struggling to get new equipment to shops and end customers. We are clearly realising that for many customers, only the discontinued market with reduced prices is of interest. Nevertheless, we see time and again that the enthusiasm is there! People are keen - but the limits of what is feasible are becoming increasingly narrow for many.
