Who are you and where can you be found?
We are the online surf shop - emerged from WSM. Funsport, founded and managed by Kai Geffken. You can find us locally in the heart of Oldenburg (Ammergaustr. 10) and throughout Europe around the clock via www.online-surfshop.de.
When was your shop founded, what have been important milestones since then?
WSM. Funsport was founded in 2003 by Kai Geffken as a classic surf shop for windsurfing and snowboarding. Important milestones were the start of online trading from 2005/06 (first eBay, then online shop), the move to a larger shop, the expansion of the product range (wing, kites, SUP, winter sports) and professional warehouse logistics from 2010. Since then, we have stood for a mix of stationary shop, online sales and personal service - and have continued to grow with typical ups and downs.
What sports do you have in your programme?
Our range covers windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoiling, stand up paddling (SUP), wakeboarding, winter sports (ski & snowboard) and fun sports - including accessories, service and hire.
Approximately how many boards, sails and wings do you have in stock?
Depending on the season, around 70-100 boards (windsurf, wing, SUP), 150 sails and 500 wings - plus plenty of foils, 500 kites and an incredible 2000 wetsuits. There is no larger selection of wetsuits in Germany.
Can I also order online from you?
Of course, as I said, we are primarily www.online-surfshop.de active! We deliver throughout Europe and provide advice both online and offline. Our product portfolio includes almost 50,000 items from all manufacturers.
Do you have special events like camps, flea markets, parties or something like that?
We regularly organise flea markets for used equipment, test events on the lake and beach, workshops and ski service events in winter. There are always special offers at the opening/closing of the season and sometimes a barbecue party or spontaneous team event.
What makes you special?
We combine genuine board sports expertise, personal advice, an open community and, in particular, e-commerce expertise. Our team lives the sport itself, looks after customers with passion and remains approachable even after the purchase - whether for service, repair or replacement.
Your most bizarre/unusual experience in the shop?
From a SUP test day with spontaneous dog swimming to a wedding in a shop with a surfing wedding dress, everything is included - the day when a "wetsuit thief" fell backwards into a shop window while fleeing was also unusual (with a happy ending: no one hurt, wetsuit back);-). In general, however, we are always amused by wetsuits that are put on the wrong way round.
What is your impression of the market and the attitude of customers?
Boardsports remains more than just a "trend": many customers want advice and community - and real service too. Online retail is booming and displacing bricks-and-mortar retail. This is also the case for us. The market is diverse and on the move, and sustainability as well as test and hire options are becoming increasingly important. However, increasingly expensive products are putting more and more people off. It's a luxury sport - there's no question about that! Our customers appreciate transparent prices, honesty ... and the fact that we still have real surfers in the shop, although more and more Oldenburg customers are also buying online. The trend is unstoppable.
