The whole of Fehmarn is into stand up paddling!
From Friday 19 July to Sunday 21 July 2019, the south beach of Fehmarn was transformed into Germany's stand-up paddling stronghold. In ideal conditions and with a record turnout of almost 100 starters, the new German champions were crowned in the Sprint, Technical Beach Race and Long Distance. In addition to top-class sport, it was also about taking part and trying things out, and here too new visitor records were broken; all taster courses were fully booked.the festival meadow was all about travelling and enjoyment. The camp organised by the trade magazine EXPLORER showed participants how to turn their travel dreams into reality, while the food trucks provided culinary variety.

German SUP Championships

Organiser Dirk Herpel and the regatta management left it open until the last day which discipline would be raced on which day. And that was deliberate. Dirk Herpel: "We are by the sea and want to offer all athletes top conditions; this is only possible if Mother Nature has the last word in timing." This apparently flattered the lady and so she rewarded the participants with top conditions: Friday flat water for the sprints, waves for the Technical Beach Race on Saturday and perfect downwind conditions for the Long Distance Race on Sunday. Here, the organisers once again proved their flexibility and laid out a new downwind course with a start in Gold, under the Fehmarnsund Bridge and back to the event area.

In all three races, only one thing was certain: in the end, Normen Weber stood on the podium in the men's race. In the absence of Ole Schwarz, the SUPinator demonstrated that no other German paddler can currently pose a threat to him. The women's race was much closer, even though Hannah Leni Krah won the sprint and the technical beach race. The women's Technical Beach Race was the most exciting race of the DM. The three top women, Paulina Herpel, Noelani Sach and Hannah Leni Krah, fought a tough head-to-head race over the three-kilometre course - peppered with plenty of turns and two beach runs - right up to the last buoy. In the long distance race, Noelani took the title ahead of Paulina, who also fought for victory for a long time.

In the U-18 age group, Benjamin Kohl in particular put in an impressive performance. He paddled his way into the top 10 of the men in all three disciplines. The 14-year-old from Hamburg is rightly the new German junior champion in the sprint, technical beach race and long distance.

Event manager Julia Behrend from the Fehmarn Tourist Service: "Lots of happy faces! That's probably the best way to sum up the SUP & Beachsport Festival 2019, which focussed on taking part, trying out new things and enjoying life. Simply fantastic! There were exciting races in the various disciplines and well-deserved victories to be seen. Congratulations to the newly crowned German champions!"

Many thanks to the visitors and athletes; we are already looking forward to seeing you again from 17 to 19 July 2020 at the ninth SUP & Beachsports Festival on Fehmarn.
