Over 70 athletes will meet at the sixth German Rapid Surfing Championships in Freiburg on 27 and 28 September 2025 to compete for national titles on the Irie surf standing wave. Organised by the German Surfing Association, the event promises urban surf vibes and spectacular competitions in eight divisions with a livestream and live podcast.

The German Surfing Association (DWV) invites you to the sixth edition of the German Rapid Surfing Championships in Freiburg im Breisgau at the end of September. On 27 and 28 September 2025, more than 70 participants will compete in the new surf location "Irie surf" to win the national titles in eight different divisions. The event, presented by MINI, is the urban highlight of the competition year after the German Surfing Championships held two weeks earlier in Seignosse (France). The event will be broadcast via livestream and accompanied by a live podcast so that surf fans can follow the action up close.

More on the topic:

Urban surfing experience at Irie surf in Freiburg

The championships will be held at Irie surf in Freiburg, a modern surfing location that offers much more than just a competition area. The centrepiece of the facility is an artificially created standing wave that offers both beginners and experienced surfers optimal conditions. The location also functions as a venue for concerts and community projects, making it the ideal choice for an event of this size. Unlike traditional surfing in the sea, the wave remains stationary during rapid surfing - either artificially generated as in Freiburg or in a natural river. This allows athletes to perform spectacular tricks in a limited flow area and combines elements of surfing with techniques from skateboarding and snowboarding.

Competition format and divisions

The German Rapid Surfing Championship is organised in a total of eight divisions, which are divided by gender and age group. The men's and women's categories are Open, Juniors, Masters and Grandmasters. The qualifying rounds will start on Saturday 27 September, while the eagerly awaited finals will be held on Sunday 28 September from 9:00 am. Surf enthusiasts who are unable to attend the event will have the opportunity to follow the competitions via livestream on the Twitch platform. In addition, fans can follow the event via an online scoring system, which enables detailed tracking of performances and scores.

Supporting programme with live podcast

In addition to the sporting competitions, the German Rapid Surfing Championship also offers an attractive supporting programme. On Saturday evening, the podcast series "FLUT & FLOW" will be broadcast live on Twitch. In this talk show, guests from the scene will look back on the rapid surf contests of 2025 and discuss current developments in the still young sport. The German Surfing Association has been organising national rapid surfing championships since 2019 in response to the growing popularity of this urban variant of surfing. As the national elite sports association for surfing, rapid surfing, SUP and bodyboarding, the DWV represents German athletes at international competitions and promotes both young talent and the community.
