The 26-year-old Chris from Cologne has been a passionate fitness athlete and surfer for 10 years. After studying at the German Sport University in Cologne, he managed a health centre before setting up his own business as a personal trainer. Today, his clients include both private customers and well-known companies. His sporting passion, however, is surfing. His successes include 4th place at the German Surfboard Paddle Race Championships in 2011 and 2012.
Now he wants more. His sporting goal is to paddle 1200 kilometres along the Rhine from the source to the estuary on a SUP at the end of August. Equipped with a JP Sportster and paddle and neoprene clothing from NP, he wants to be the first person on a stand-up board to beat the current world record set by Swiss kayaker Corrado Filipponi as the fastest individual athlete in 2010. To do this, Chris has to complete the distance in 7 days, 10 hours and 16 minutes. According to Chris, this is only possible with a polyphasic sleep pattern, where he will only sleep 2 hours a day. With this superhuman method, there is no core sleep phase like most people have at night. He only sleeps in deep sleep phases, divided into 6 20-minute naps over 24 hours. Chris is supported in his endeavours by a whole team. They will provide him with food and medical care, prepare and follow up the break stations and accompany him by boat, especially during the difficult night stages. In addition to the lack of sleep and the wet cold, the darkness and boat traffic are probably the most dangerous aspects of the whole endeavour. Such a feat is only possible as a team, says Chris. As a personal trainer and speaker, Chris Ley accompanies his clients on the wave ride of their lives. Under the motto: "Successful on the wave of your life!" he shows them how wonderful it is to be carried by a sporting or professional wave instead of paddling against it.
