The Decathlon SUP Exploration 12'6 x 32" stands out in the budget price range thanks to its length of 12'6 feet (383 cm). Priced at 349 euros, the board is positioned as an affordable option for paddlers looking for a longer touring board. Unlike many short all-round boards in this price range, the Exploration promises better gliding performance and directional stability. This test aims to show whether the board lives up to these expectations.
The Decathlon SUP Exploration 12'6 comes with a well-thought-out and practical set of features. The board comes in a compact carry bag with a rucksack-style carrying system, though without wheels. If rolled up neatly, the board fits snugly inside, making it comfortable to carry on your back. Weighing around 10 kilograms, the SUP is easy to carry. The fin is inserted into a short slide-in compartment, which makes rolling the board up easier but comes at the expense of maximum directional stability. The adhesive pad is thin, soft and non-slip, but does not cover the entire tail.
When it comes to handling, the Decathlon SUP Exploration 12'6 really comes into its own as a touring board. It accelerates well and, thanks to its length of 12'6 feet, stays on course well despite its relatively small fin. The board offers a sporty riding experience and achieves good touring speeds with minimal paddling resistance. With a width of 32 inches (81 cm) at the centre, it offers sufficient stability for a touring board. The flat bottom profile and the slightly upturned bow contribute to its good gliding performance and sporty paddling feel.
When manoeuvring, the Exploration displays the typical characteristics of a longer board. Classic turns require two paddle strokes, whilst pivot turns demand a little more practice due to the lack of a pad at the stern. The front luggage net is conveniently positioned and allows equipment to be secured quickly. Several rings for mounting a kayak seat increase its versatility. However, there is no carrying handle at the stern, which makes it difficult for two people to carry the board.
In terms of build quality, the Decathlon SUP Exploration 12'6 certainly holds its own against more expensive models. The bonding is neatly executed, with no visible creases or bubbles along the seams. Even at the bow and stern, where tight curves present a challenge, there are no signs of wrinkled adhesive joints. Priced at 349 euros, the board offers excellent value for money, particularly for advanced paddlers looking for a longer touring board.
The Decathlon SUP Exploration 12'6 x 32" impressed in our test with its well-designed outline, good build quality and an attractive price. It stands out from many budget options in that it is also suitable for advanced paddlers planning more challenging or longer trips. For ambitious paddlers, it might be worth fitting an additional luggage net to the stern, what can be achieved for less than 30 euros. All in all, the board is a highly recommended option for budget-conscious touring enthusiasts.
