The carbon vario paddle from Bic is stiff and robust. It also has probably the most unusual vario system, which also works well. However, there is one thing you should pay attention to with the tested "L" paddle.

Unfortunately, the paddle didn't make it into the current test in the 2016 SUP magazine because, at a price of €259, it was beyond the scope of the test group. However, we would like to present it anyway. The unusual vario system in particular is unrivalled. In addition to numerous push-button systems, the Bic system is characterised by the almost seamless transition on the grip tube. There is no clamp, no lever, the top tube disappears precisely into the down tube - that's it. The actual clamping happens on the inside. A technically complex solution, but with several advantages. Roughly speaking, you can imagine it like the squeeze rubber in a thermos flask, which is compressed and becomes wider in the process. A similar rubber is located at the end of the adjustment tube. The rubber is then squeezed together by a steel cable running inside the tube, which is tensioned by a lever in the handle. Sounds complicated, but in practice it's easy to do.

To release, the lever is folded out, then turn the handle slightly and press down, and the paddle can be infinitely adjusted. There is a marking for precise adjustment, so the handle is always perfectly aligned with the blade. As soon as you flip the lever again, the squeeze rubber is tightened and seals the paddle without play or wobbling. This also keeps it watertight. In the longitudinal direction, the closure was bombproof.

The tube is made of fairly thick-walled carbon fibre: Stiffness and stability took precedence over maximum weight savings. This is complemented by the blade, which is also very robust and made of solid GRP. You will certainly find lighter paddles in this price range, but the BIC paddle is more convincing as a particularly stiff and powerful paddle. The thin blade penetrates very cleanly and immediately builds up good pressure, despite the paddle blade being quite soft at the tip. In our opinion, the paddle is therefore more suitable for larger and stronger paddlers. In addition, the basic length of the tested "L" version of the paddle is already particularly long, meaning that shorter people under 1.80 metres may not be able to adjust it to the desired length. You should check this before buying. The paddle is also available as a Performer CF in blue with a length of 170-210 cm.

He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
