The Lusatian Lake District, situated between Berlin and Dresden, is set to take another step forward in its development today: with the opening of several canals, five open-cast mining lakes will be linked together to form a single network for water sports enthusiasts. This will enable tours of 40 kilometres from Lake Senftenberg to Lake Großräschen – ideal for an exploratory trip on a SUP.
Frank Maibach captured the charm of the newly emerging waterscape around two years ago in his comprehensive guide to surf spots captured. A vibrant surfing community has already sprung up around the former open-cast mines, complete with clubs, surf centres and joint initiatives. Alexander Dunkel, chairman of the newly formed Lausitzer Surfer association (www.lausitzer-surfer.de) enthused at the time: “Lusatia is a brilliant surfing spot with huge potential.” Thanks to the variety of spots, you can find a suitable spot to get started whatever the wind direction.
The reopening of the canals opens up new possibilities, particularly for longer SUP tours. Until now, the Koschener Canal between Senftenberger See and Geierswalder See, and the Barbara Canal between Geierswalder See and Partwitzer See, were the only navigable waterways in the region. Now, three further navigable canals are opening. According to the Lausitzer Seenland Tourism Association, they connect the centrally located Lake Sedlitz with the neighbouring bodies of water: the Sorno Canal leads to Lake Geierswalde, the Rosendorf Canal to Lake Partwitz and the Ilse Canal to Lake Großräschen. “Individual hotspots along the shores merge to form a coherent network for day trips and weekend getaways. The combination of vast stretches of water and short stretches of river makes trips through the region particularly varied,” says the association.
