Rivers are the arteries of the earth and for stand-up paddlers they are true neighbourhood paradises. They can flow through the countryside in a wild and romantic way or rush through valleys at a sporty pace. They can have an absolutely flat water character like the Altmühl or Danube and are suitable for hiking tours, even for beginners. However, as soon as a river takes on a whitewater (WW) character, it harbours unknown dangers for novices, which can only be assessed and avoided by an experienced friend or guide. Before embarking on a river tour, you should always find out about the course of the river and possible dangers such as weirs or other obstacles. Let's learn from kayakers and canoeists - they discovered the rivers long before us and learnt how to navigate them. Anyone venturing into white water should also wear the right protective clothing (shoes, suit, impact waistcoat, helmet and knee pads). The right choice of board and fins is also essential.
