SUP trip: Canary Islands - Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest Canary Island and a favourite winter holiday destination for Germans. Windsurfing pro Iballa Moreno lives right "next door" on Gran Canaria and knows almost all the windsurfing spots on Tenerife. Now Iballa has also dedicated herself to the SUP sport. Time to carefully reveal some SUP secrets to Tenerife.

My name is Iballa Moreno. I am Daida's twin sister. You know me from windsurfing. Daida and I are the same in many ways - identical twins. But there are also many differences. Some are obvious, some are secret, others are rather unusual in our situation: one of them is my love of stand-up paddling. Daida doesn't paddle.

What we both have in common is our attachment to our homeland. It is precisely because we have travelled and surfed the world with the board that we recognise our Canarian happiness. Just as I am different from my siblings, the Canary Islands are different from each other. Each island has its own character. The wind and the Canary Islands work differently. I know my way around Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, I'm a local. Tenerife, on the other hand, is a new world for me. Fortunately, one of my best friends, David Santiago aka Vilayta Bajamar (ed.: rider on this SUP title), is from Tenerife and one of the best Canarian surfers and stand-up paddlers.

As with almost all islands, waves reach the land from all directions. I wanted to get to know the best spots on my neighbouring island. But there was a crucial catch: foreign surfers are highly undesirable at the good and extreme spots. Even with my name and my wave experience, I'm a gringo to them. However, I was tolerated in David's tow. It must be funny for me as a Canarian to say that the island of Tenerife sounds like a holiday to me. When I accepted Vilayta's invitation last winter, I just wanted to relax and explore the SUP spots with him.
