The Verdon Gorge is the second longest and deepest gorge in Europe. The river has carved its way through the limestone almost as far as the Mediterranean (Nice is just 70 kilometres away as the crow flies). While the actual gorge is only suitable for experts, beginners can take a wonderful tour on turquoise water from Lac de Sainte Croix against the gentle current and experience a Grand Canyon feeling or paddle to the dam from St. Laurent.
Approach:Either via Switzerland to Grenoble and Manosque or from the east via Nice, Cagne-sur-Mer to Castelllane. Travelling time: The best time is from April to June. In July, the region is overcrowded with tourists and should be avoided. Camping: Beautiful campsite on the middle reaches of the Verdon near the Pont de Carajuan ( www.camping-gorgesduverdon-carajuan-rougon.com ). Tip for the tour described:Camping Le Galetas ( www.aiguines.com/galetas.html )
