Even the journey from Chur to the gorge at Versam is a feast for the eyes. The Upper Rhine offers challenging paddling (WW II–III) for stand-up paddlers from Ilanz to Versam. Our suggested tour is slightly easier, offers more spectacular scenery and is a good introduction for both white-water novices and experts. The great thing about this tour is that the train runs every hour from Reichenau (get off after the first bridge at the canoe school grounds; a 15-minute walk to the station) back to Versam station. There’s a café there and a canoe school with friendly, helpful staff. The school also offers SUP guiding.
How to get there: From Bregenz, take the Swiss motorway to Chur. Take the Tamins exit, then continue via Bonaduz and Versam through the gorge to Versam railway station.
