As the world's largest trade fair for mobile travelling, the Caravan Salon in Düsseldorf attracts numerous visitors and manufacturers every year. But not every mobile is made for wet equipment and bulky boards. What catches your eye as a surfer in the packed halls? We took a look around.

Should you build it yourself or prefer an off-the-peg model? Storage space, moisture management and the question of whether the beloved boards belong on the roof or rather in the protected interior (under the bed) - these are all typical considerations for surfers among campers. There is no patent remedy, but there is a wide range of options. While the market for motorhomes and caravans seems almost endless, the range of products specifically for water sports enthusiasts is still limited. Here are five interesting things for surfers that stand out at the Caravan Salon 2025.

More about surfing and camping:

1. spacious (motorbike) garages with plenty of storage space for windsurfing equipment

Windsurfers who do not want to lift their equipment onto the vehicle roof all the time need sufficient storage space under the bed in a van or motorhome. This is why many windsurfers' van conversions are modelled on concepts for the interior transport of motorbikes, such as those offered by manufacturers like Weinsberg with the "Outlaw". Some models have longer garages with a lengthways bed above, while others rely on shorter garages with a transverse bed. In some vehicles, the height of the bed can even be adjusted (electronically) in order to utilise the storage space flexibly. In the motorhome sector, the very large rear garages from Italian manufacturer Roller Team caught the eye.

3. beach feeling at the Hobby stand

A caravan that Hobby says belongs on the beach: the minimalist Beachy line with a beach look attracted a lot of interest at the Caravan Salon. Aimed at a young target group and anyone who appreciates uncomplicated travelling. Park your caravan and travel flexibly by car to the right spot - why not?

4. large selection of roof tents

Storing boards and sails in the interior of the everyday estate car and sleeping in the roof tent on top? Sounds interesting - as long as it's not blowing at eight Beaufort at night... Rooftop tents are currently enjoying great popularity and are also an important topic at the Caravan Salon 2025. Numerous manufacturers presented new models designed to impress with improved ease of use, lighter materials and optimised ventilation. From compact hard-shell roof tents to spacious folding versions, the trade fair offered a comprehensive overview of current trends and technical developments. Solutions for everyday vehicles that can be transformed into fully-fledged camper vans in just a few simple steps were particularly in demand.

5. self-build adventure

At the Caravan Salon, the topic of self-conversion attracts both beginners and experienced vanlife enthusiasts. Suppliers of conversion components, furniture modules and technical solutions will be presenting their range of customised vehicle conversions in special exhibition areas. From insulated floor panels and modular kitchen systems to self-sufficient power and water supplies, self-builders will find everything they need for their personal conversion project.

Workshops and presentations at the exhibition centre will also offer practical insights into planning, material selection and implementation strategies. Topics such as sustainable expansion, smart use of space or legal aspects of conversion will be covered, as will creative design solutions. The great interest shows: The desire for customised, flexible touring vehicles is growing - and not just among us water sports enthusiasts.
