In the fashion industry, there are "outfitters" who send a customised complete package from shoes to shirt to your home. Surf newcomers without their own equipment can at least find a complete set off the peg. The complete sail should ensure that everything fits together at a more favourable price. We have checked this out - and found pretty much everything from almost perfect customisation to a completely "colourful dog".

Just under 700 euros is roughly the average price for an average complete rig. In the high-end freeride segment, only the sail easily costs that much. This alone makes these rigs particularly interesting for starting your own equipment store. All rigs can be set up completely with the supplied components, all ropes, a mast cup or an extension and a furling line are always included. You are ready to go almost immediately. In some cases, even the mast base is already included in the package, so all that's really missing is the bare board and, at some point, trapeze ropes. You will have to accept some compromises in terms of equipment and materials, but there are at least four or five very good sets for getting started in windsurfing and progressing to gliding in a harness. And as a pure light wind engine for the stand-up board - without any ambitions of planing - you don't need significantly more expensive high-end equipment in the long term.

Here is an overview of the sails tested:

With a little imagination, it doesn't get boring even in light winds. The sails and boards in this test ensure windsurfing fun even without a strong planing wind. (in the photo: JP-Australia Vision 5.5)

Deputy Editor in Chief surf

Stephan Gölnitz comes from Bochum and had Holland as his home windsurfing territory for many years before moving to Munich in 1996 for the job of test editor at surf magazine. The materials engineering graduate worked as a surf instructor on the Ijsselmeer during his studies and competed for several seasons for the Essen sailing team in the Surfbundesliga and the Funboard Cup. He completed a traineeship at surf-Magazin in the test department and since then has actively accompanied almost all tests on the boom and for more than 10 years also as a photographer. Stephan has covered many thousands of test kilometers, mainly on Lake Garda and in Langebaan, but also in Egypt and Tobago. He gets his hands on over 100 new sails and boards every year as his company car. Privately, he prefers to surf with a foil on Lake Walchensee or “unfortunately far too rarely” in the waves. SUP is Stephan's second passion, which he pursued for several years at numerous SUP races. Today, he prefers to paddle on river tours with family or friends - even for several days.
