Each harness consists of a waist belt and a hook with which you hook into the harness ropes attached to the boom. There are generally two types of harness - seat harness and hip harness.
Seat harnesses have leg straps and a slightly lower hook position. You "sit" a little more, which takes the strain off your back during long surf sessions. However, hip harnesses are better suited to beginners, as the higher hook position makes it easier to hook and unhook and you have more freedom of movement due to the lack of leg straps. Which system you use as an experienced windsurfer is a matter of taste and not a question of right or wrong.
Ideally, harnesses should be tried on beforehand to prevent them from pinching and chafing afterwards. However, women in particular should ensure that they do not buy a men's harness but a model for ladies, which always has customised ergonomics.
Harnesses are very easy to buy second-hand because there is not much that can break on them. Before buying, check whether the quick-release fastener works and whether the straps are chafed. If this is the case, don't bother!
Used harnesses are available for as little as 30-40 euros. New ones are available for 90-200 euros, depending on the brand and model. You'll find what you're looking for here:
