Tricks like the Board-360 aren't radical moves, but they're always eye-catching - you don't even need good conditions for them! Peter Garzke shows you how it's done!

It doesn't always have to be radical turns and jumps, sometimes little gimmicks are enough to create a storm of enthusiasm on the beach. Small tricks that hardly anyone has on their radar and that are great fun, especially in light wind conditions. When the wind dies down and there are no more jumps or wave rides, it's just the right time for an old-school classic like the Board-360

You can practise this trick ideally with not too powerful foam waves, as they often occur on the Baltic Sea, and wind conditions that no longer allow powered planing. However, the wind should be halfway sideshore to sideonshore. In completely onshore conditions, however, the Board 360 is difficult.

The Board 360 explained step by step

  • 1-2) Glide towards the beach with a small foam wave on a light closehauled course - a knee-high wave is absolutely sufficient. Open the sail, unhook from the harness and simply let the wave push you. Take a big step forwards. By shifting your body weight to the front leg and applying light pressure to the heels, the fins will come free and you can now push the tail towards the wave trough by applying gentle pressure with the back leg. Important: Try to keep your upper body upright to avoid falling backwards under the sail.
  • 3-4) When you have managed to steer the tail to leeward, quickly change your foot position. To do this, first place the rear foot on the bow, heel to heel for a short moment. Immediately pull the former front foot further in front of the base plate (4, in relation to the direction of travel). Because you are now surfing on the crest of the wave and the tail is pointing towards the wave trough, the fins remain free - with the appropriate skills and a wave that is travelling a little, you can even extend the fin-forward ride.
  • 5-6) As soon as the wave loses power, it's time to complete the second half of the Board-360. Apply gentle pressure to push the bow slightly to leeward and turn the tail to windward and towards the wave. During this phase, make sure you don't hang back too much under the sail, but stay upright over the board.
  • 7-8) As soon as the fins take hold, the board turns almost automatically. The moment the bow slides back towards the wave trough, you have to take a quick step back to the tail. If everything works, you can continue surfing the foam wave after the board 360.
