Whether as a set or on its own, the Goya Surf Trainer children’s sail is sure to be the perfect companion for kids taking their first steps in windsurfing.

At the Surf Festival on Fehmarn This year, just under 80 children took part in free taster sessions organised by the surf editorial team in collaboration with the Saltwater Shop. For our editors and coaches, this was the perfect opportunity to put some new equipment through its paces – including the Goya Surf Trainer, which we were able to try out in the 2.0 square metre size.

On land

The Surf Trainer sail is available in increments of 0.5 square metres, ranging from 1.0 to 5.5 square metres. Depending on its size, it features between one and three battens. Unlike with some other brands, the sail is not rigged on a perfectly straight aluminium mast, but on a flexible epoxy mast, which helps to form the sail’s profile. The rig is complemented by the Boom Fix gaff. This has a sturdy head piece, allowing it to be securely fastened to the mast. A plus point: the gaff recess is generously sized, providing plenty of space to mount the gaff on the mast. The spars are extremely thin, making them ideal for even small children’s hands to grip comfortably. The sail is available separately (220 euros) or as a complete set with mast, boom, extension and launch line for 479 euros.

On the water

We spent four days testing the size 2.0 Surf Trainer rig with lots of young surfers. Thanks to its dimensions and overall low weight, hoisting it is exceptionally easy. Even in light winds, a full profile develops, ensuring a stable airflow and good propulsion. The high-cut sheet end also provides plenty of room for manoeuvres and prevents the rig from making contact with the water too early when steering and tacking.

surf’s verdict on the Goya Surf Trainer

Easy to handle, plenty of drive – the Surf Trainer rig is ideal for children and teenagers as they progress from hoisting the sail for the first time to planing. Once harness sailing and planing become second nature, the Scion model, with its three battens, should be a sensible upgrade.
