Leon Delle and Oliver-Tom Schliemann, the brains behind the Racer of the Sea, look back on a successful season: "As the biggest shortboard regatta series in Germany, the Racer of the Sea has once again shown just how big the windsurfing regatta scene really is. The high number of participants made it clear how much this format fulfils the wishes and needs of windsurfers," they write in their review of the season. The success factors include beginner-friendly Baltic Sea areas, low entry fees, no equipment restrictions and lots of extras such as raffle prizes and prize money. This makes the Racer of the Sea particularly interesting for young people and female shortboard surfers - one of the organisers' main concerns
The season began at the surf festival on Fehmarn, where 64 participants took part. The conditions on the water were ideal and special guests such as Marco Lang and Dany Bruch provided additional excitement and enthusiasm.
The second stop of the Racer of the Sea series took place for the first time in the Baltic seaside resort of Kellenhusen. A total of 51 racers gathered there to compete in the races. In addition, around 40 wave surfers found their way to Kellenhusen to compete for the wave riding title in the newly founded German Wave Tour.
At the end of the season, 53 starters came together at the Hemmelmark campsite, where, despite the lack of wind conditions, a family atmosphere and an extensive supporting programme ensured a well-rounded end to the season.
According to the organisers, no fewer than 119 different participants took part in the Racer of the Sea in 2023, including 27 young people under the age of 19, 13 of whom were even under the age of 16. "In addition, ten women showed that they are absolutely competitive in this competition, which was also honoured with prize money."
In addition to the prize money, which was sponsored by the online shop Wind Lounge, all U19 surfers were entered into a raffle for a new Severne race sail and a team rider deal from Starboard & Severne to promote young talent even more.
"Special thanks are due to the generous sponsors such as Starboard, Severne and Wind Lounge, who make a significant contribution to the success of these events and the funding opportunities. Further support came from Salty Elements Sylt, the HDI general agency Dankers, EDEKA, Surf and Fashion Fehmarn, Xcel Wetsuits and many volunteers," say Leon Delle and Oliver-Tom Schliemann.
