On the third competition day of the Aloha Classics in Ho'okipa, the men's double elimination opened. The first three rounds were completed in solid, logo-high waves - with one or two remarkable comebacks.

Unfortunately, there was no chance to follow the action on Maui live yesterday, as only three days of the event can be streamed for unknown reasons. The organisers have therefore decided to skip yesterday and save the stream for the final day of the double elimination, on which the title will hopefully be decided.
It's a shame, because yesterday, in the first rounds of the double elimination, was already pretty exciting.

Marc Paré and Levi Siver on a comeback mission

After a disappointing first day in the first round, Marc Paré, who still has a chance of winning the world title among other things, picked himself up and fought his way back through the double elimination: the Spaniard qualified second in the first round, but then improved from heat to heat by winning the next two heats and scoring the highest score of the day in the first heat of the third round with 13.23 points. With a massive frontside 360, he was able to break into the top ten, which will boost his hopes of a place on the prestigious overall podium.

Paré will now battle Thomas Traversa, Levi Siver and Ricardo Campello in round four for a place in the top seven. Like Paré, Siver has also progressed in three consecutive heats, making a successful comeback. One cannot rule out the possibility of the 2013 Aloha Classic champion advancing even further, while Campello faces a heat of death to keep his world championship ambitions alive. It is absolutely essential that the 38-year-old survives this heat - and a few more - if he is to fight back and claim his first wave world title.

Takara Ishi meets Maui locals

On the other side of the bracket, Japan's Takara Ishii will face three Maui locals in round four - three-time Aloha Classic champion Morgan Noireaux, Kai Lenny and Jake Schettewi, all of whom look strong and dangerous, so it will be another tough heat to judge.
Kai Lenny was one of the standout riders in the single elimination. The Waterman impressed the judges with his clean turns in the style of a surfer, but failed in the semi-finals. He will definitely be hungry for more and will give his all to get to the top.

From a German perspective

Unfortunately, things are not looking particularly good for the men this year. The three Germans Leon Jamaer, Julian Salmonn and Henri Kohlberg are no longer in the running. Jamaer had made it through to the second round and thus the furthest. In his first heat, in round one, he even went on to win with 10.53 points - in the following heat, the Kiel native also got off to a good start, but then failed to find a decent wave for a second score and was eliminated. In the women's event, however, things are looking very good with Maria Behrens in a sensational third place and Lina Erpenstein close behind in fifth place - everything is still wide open for the double elimination.

We will continue on Thursday at the earliest

Rest days are forecast for the next two days. Wednesday has already been officially cancelled. A new swell is not expected to hit Maui until Thursday, and the trade winds are also expected to return. So hopefully there will be a worthy conclusion to the grand finale of the Aloha Classics 2023. We are excited.
The Live Stream should be back for the last day - so don't forget to switch it on.
