Blood cancer can affect anyone: Every 12 minutes, someone in Germany is diagnosed with this devastating disease, and every 27 seconds worldwide. The disease is still the most common cause of cancer-related deaths in children. But there is hope: a stem cell donation can give many sufferers a second chance at life. Like Anja, a windsurfer from northern Germany. More than two years ago, the 33-year-old was diagnosed with leukaemia. Following a stem cell transplant, she is now on the road to recovery and is looking forward to getting back on the water with her board soon. Her appeal is clear: "Anyone who can register should do so and perhaps save someone's life with their stem cell donation!" Anja will tell you about her story at the surf festival.
DKMS will be taking part in the Mercedes-Benz Surf Festival from 26 to 29 May on the south beach on Fehmarn. As part of the festival week, the organisation is also organising "World Blood Cancer Day" (WBCD) on 28 May. On this important day, which takes place every year on 28 May, the topic of blood cancer and the simplicity of registration is brought to the forefront of society. At the festival, you will also have the opportunity to register with DKMS free of charge - and with a bit of luck, become a lifesaver later on.
All information about DKMS you can find here You can find out what else is going on at the Surf Festival on Fehmarn from 26 to 29 May on the Festival website.
