The ProAm Windsurf Cup returns to the North Sea. On 16 and 17 May, the Wesermünde Windsurf Club will host the slalom regatta for the second time in Dorum-Neufeld, on the North Sea coast between Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven. The format is also aimed at regatta newcomers and is designed to make it easier to get started. The local conditions offer relaxed conditions for the first steps in competition. The number of races per day depends on the available wind and water conditions, allowing participants to make intensive use of the time available. The organisation of the starts aims to avoid unnecessary waiting times or additional qualification rounds. This should enable as many participants as possible to take part in the races. The DLRG Dorum supports safety on the water.

The races mainly take place in a full fleet on a classic figure-eight course. The number of laps is flexibly adapted to the respective weather conditions and the performance of the participants. In addition to the official classifications, there is also a so-called fun classification. This is aimed in particular at participants without competition experience and creates additional incentives for sporting competition. The start processes are designed to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

The windsurfing spot in Dorum-Neufeld

The windsurfing spot depends on the tide. Windsurfing is possible about one and a half hours before to one and a half hours after high tide. The nearby cutter harbour is connected to the North Sea via a channel. This channel runs in a west-east direction and can be used for entering and leaving the harbour depending on the wind direction, for example when changing equipment or when the water is running out. The tideway divides the area into a northern and a southern section. While the southern section is mainly used by kitesurfers, the northern section is mainly used by windsurfers. It is generally possible to use both areas, but appropriate consideration must be shown.

At medium high tide, the water is up to around 900 metres deep on the south side and around 750 metres deep on the north side. There are smaller tidal channels within the district that flow into the main navigation channel. These can locally lead to greater water depths. Due to the comparatively clear conditions, the area is considered suitable for beginners and advanced windsurfers. At the same time, it offers the opportunity to gain experience in more challenging weather conditions, which would sometimes be more difficult on other stretches of coastline.

How do you like this article?

There are several groynes in the area, including a short groyne in the entrance area and longer structures to demarcate swimming and water sports zones. Another, less visible groyne is located in the northern area. Some of these structures are marked and should be observed, especially by those unfamiliar with the area. Knowledge of the local conditions contributes to the safety of all water sports enthusiasts.
