When you think of big wave spots, the legendary breaks on Maui usually come to mind. But Thomas Traversa has often shown us the potential for monster waves in Europe. In his new video, Belgian rider Dieter van der Eyken presents a few crisp big wave spots on the Canary Island of Tenerife.

In 2015, the Belgian won the title of freestyle world champion on the PWA Wavetour. Since then, he has increasingly moved into the wave rider camp. The 30-year-old has lived in Tenerife since 2018 and is one of the top riders at the World Cup break in Cabezo. He is now also part of the Serverne development team and occasionally takes it upon himself to annoy the young freestyle hotshots in the contest.

Commenting on his new video about a big wave winter in his adopted home, Dieter writes: "The winter of 2021 - 2022 was my second full winter in Tenerife since moving to the island in 2018. With strong Calima winds, a few SW storms and a lot of spot checking, it was another winter filled with special big wave sessions. From an unexpected session in the north to unique conditions in Las Amerias that you only see in very rare strong south-easterly Calima winds. The north coast of Tenerife has some of the best and most intense waves imaginable, where the line between the perfect turn and a trip to the rocks is extremely thin. It's that rush of being on the edge of your comfort zone and the unique feeling you get in the bottom turn when you ride waves like this that makes it worth the risk. Thanks to everyone for filming & now I'm looking forward to a windy summer in the Canaries."

Andreas was born in 1962 and grew up in Osnabrück. He became passionate about windsurfing as early as 1974, when he learned to tack and jibe at one of the first surf schools on the Baltic Sea. Lake Dümmer became the favorite playground of his youth for him and his friends.
