The top eight men prepared for the finals on this stormy morning with mixed feelings. The current was so strong on the rising tide and the shorebreak so nasty that neither the race organisers nor the riders themselves were sure whether a competition was even possible in combination with a flat onshore wind. When Moritz Mauch managed to cross the shore break first and rode a mast-high wave on the outer sandbank, it was clear that this was going to be an epic showdown. In the end, Marc Paré stood at the top of the podium ahead of Philip Köster and Miguel Chapuis.
The 27-year-old Spaniard's onshore training paid off. Paré overcame the conditions with a clear plan, very calculated and at the same time surfed spectacularly. The motto was to get a safe jump score far enough out and then slowly drop into the critical shorebreak area. There, the riders delivered some critical wave rides that had the entire beach cheering them on. Because one second too late or one fall and the heat was over.
A clean double loop gave the Spaniard the lead over Köster in the end, who showed good rides and a nice one-legged backloop, but was unable to find the ideal ramp for an excellent double. The young Spaniard Miguel Chapuis (24) secured his first podium in the World Cup ahead of former champion Fernandez and was visibly thrilled.
The sight of the wild, churning North Sea alone drew large crowds to the promenade. The fact that it was also raining double loops as high as houses in the midst of the forces of nature was the icing on the cake and amazed the spectators. Despite repeated rain showers, the spectators stood their ground and cheered on the athletes, especially when they got stuck in a shorebreak near the beach.
