There was plenty of sunshine for the traditional opening of the World Cup Sylt. So far there has only been training on the water, but tomorrow should see the start of the slalom.

Even though the first Friday of the Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt 2025 officially opens the event, it is not yet a competition day. As a result, there were only a few training sessions on the water today. Many of the slalom riders went out and warmed up in bright sunshine and a strong easterly wind, including Pierre Mortefon, who was able to get a good start after the Forced material change has to get used to his new equipment. Maciek Rutkowski was also out there, having been a mammoth trip across the Baltic Sea but said that he had recovered. "It's nice to be back at full throttle," said the Pole. In addition to the foilers, Japanese freestylers Takuma Sugi and Takumi Moriya also went out for a short warm-up.

The real action starts tomorrow at around 10.00 am. Even if the wind is expected to be a little weaker, it should be enough for foil slalom. Just like last year, the already numerous spectators will be able to follow the races on a large screen directly on the promenade. The opening ceremony in the music shell was also well attended today. In keeping with tradition, the almost 100 riders marched in with their national flags and were introduced.

In addition to the sporting highlights, visitors can look forward to a varied programme on the 500-metre-long promenade. The World Cup Village will feature beach shopping, pop-up stores, gastronomic experiences and parties with free admission. The event partners are also planning a wide range of activities such as yoga sessions, panel talks, beach clean-ups, autograph sessions and test drives with title partner Citroën. "Windsurfing stands for freedom, courage and the pursuit of the extraordinary - just like Citroën. As a brand that has always stood for creative ideas, bold mobility solutions and proximity to people, we are delighted to be part of the Citroën Windsurf World Cup Sylt again this year. With passion and innovation, we are not only bringing fans closer to top-class sport, but also to the mobility of tomorrow," says Timo Hinze, Head of Advertising Citroën Germany. Sylt's Tourism Director Peter Douven was also delighted that the World Cup is once again being hosted on the island.

His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
