From sunshine to storm surges, from rainbows to race action: the best pictures from an unforgettable week at the World Cup Sylt!

The organisers of the World Cup on Sylt always like to be generous with superlatives, but the final day was definitely one of the most legendary moments in the history of the event. 41-year history of the biggest windsurfing event in the world. The wave riding final in the middle of the storm surge, the beach almost completely gone, the waves crashing onto the promenade and the judges' container flooding - this day will be talked about for years to come.

The eight best men went out, although even some of these best windsurfers in the world were afraid of the power of the North Sea, as they openly admitted. Spectacular pictures were taken, with the alternating sunshine and torrential rain providing marvellous lighting conditions and moods.

Everyone had been eagerly awaiting the grand finale on the final weekend throughout the week, and the fickle forecast between failure and huge spectacle was checked hourly. There was more action at the Aperol stands than on the water at the start, and although the crowd on the Brandenburg beach was happy in T-shirt weather, the riders were on pins and needles.

First sun and easterly wind, then storm surge

Seven foil eliminations were completed over three days in a light easterly wind, so that with the two strikes a respectable slalom result was already in the bag. And the more stable the forecast for the weekend became, the more confident the freestylers and wave riders became.

What followed was a furious final: on Friday there was an exciting freestyle elimination, which was judged far out by drone. Lennart Neubauer, the favourite of the Sylt audience, won, while Yentel Caers took his third World Championship title. In the storm tide then came the waverding, where Sol Degrieck sensationally took victory on Saturday with the last light of day. The men's event then went into overtime on Sunday morning, no more competitions were actually planned, the livestream had already ended, but spontaneously the single elimination could still be completed. Marc Paré, the top favourite and last year's winner, won ahead of Philip Köster and Miguel Chapuis.

As always, this extremely varied week was organised by photography legend John Carter and "Rafasoulart" in pictures. Click through the gallery from a legendary week on Sylt!
