A dominant victory last year, another first and a close second place yesterday at the start of the World Cup Sylt: Johan Søe seems to feel right at home in the Sylt conditions.

First of all, congratulations on your successful first day. What is your secret for always dominating so strongly here?

Phew, I don't know. I feel comfortable on the new Patrik material. I think my tactics were good. Good starts, good manoeuvres, good speed. Overall it was a very good day and I will try to keep it that way.

What is your interim conclusion for this season so far? Are you satisfied with a campaign at iQFOiL?

Yes, I am satisfied. The World Championships in Aarhus was certainly difficult because the conditions were tough. The wind was very light and shifted a lot. But I was still happy with my development, I'm making progress there too. I'd like to keep switching between the two disciplines, I think that's a good model. Maybe sometimes it will be more iQFOiL, sometimes more slalom. It probably changes every year.

And you switched to Patrik this season, they have the foil that you seem to need to win at the moment. What's the secret behind it?

I don't know the secret (laughs). It's simply the best foil, even though it's been out for a few years now. It's really impressive!

Thank you very much and good luck for the future!

His surfing CV includes all the famous choppy water spots: As a teenager, he went from his home in Münsterland to the Ijsselmeer or the Brouwersdam, and during his civilian service on Sylt, after countless washes on the west side, the Königshafen became his preferred spot. After studying in Kiel and Heidkate, he was supposed to go to Hamburg “only for a short time”, but this short time has lasted for over ten years and has made him a “weekend warrior”. He goes on tour with his family and camper van as often as possible, often to the Baltic Sea, SPO or Denmark, but also likes to go to Finland, Sweden or Sardinia.
